HISTORY

MOTO-MAQLAB-UC3M was born in 2009 when a group of students from the Carlos III University of Madrid felt the need to apply their knowledge in various fields to real and exciting projects.

Thus, a non-profit team was founded and registered to the competent authority.  Set for educational purposes, it is devoted to designing, simulating, manufacturing and competing in the motorcycling business.

The purpose of this working group is to offer training activities based on the concerns and interests of the students. This provides hands-on training, enhances teamwork and encourages the use of new technologies and resources from the university.

Within the research, team MAQLAB has always been committed to R & D. As a result, the team became involved in motorcycle racing projects, that lead to the creation of MOTO-MAQLAB-UC3M team.

In 2004 the HIPERTWIN HT-01 was developed. This bike was tested in circuit, where the tensions and deformations of the motorcycle were monitored with a telemetry system. This motorcycle has been exhibited at many fairs and it is currently used as a didactic resource at the university.

In 2008 a new project was commissioned by Hune Racing Team to race in the Spanish Speed Championship (CEV). The MOTO 2 design combines lightness, strength and good dynamic response. The motorcycle was mounted on a tubular chassis configuration made of a mixed alloy of steel-aluminum to take advantage of the mechanical qualities of both materials.

TEAM FORMATION

After establishing the team, gets involved in new challenges and with the objective of participating in MotoStudent, an international competition where engineering students' teams from all over the world must develop a viable motorcycle racing project under common standards. Thus, every eighteen months, the organization tests the models of different teams using various technical tests.

2010

MS1

With the previous years’ experience and with the desire to tackle the first edition of MotoStudent, the team developed the MS1 motorcycle in 2010. Thanks to its sophisticated suspension system and good industrial project, the group was awarded a prize of 3000€ to the best technological innovation.

2014

MS3

In 2014, for the third edition of MotoStudent, the team worked on two prototypes, one a tubular structure of steel and the other one a twin-spar cast in aluminum. The goal was to simultaneously develop two chassis compatible with the motorcycle and perform a test to evaluate the performance of each setting. Finally, due to manufacturing problems, the tubular structure was presented.

During the competition, the bike passed the tests satisfactorily and with a sufficient level of maturity as to keep on improving in future editions.  The bike had reached the goal of designing and manufacturing a low-cost motorcycle with high-quality data acquisition and monitoring systems, made entirely by team members.

CURRENTLY

In October 2016, the fourth edition of the competition was held. The team opted for developing an innovative motorcycle with character. After more than a year of hard work, the MS4 was presented. It obtained the best classification in the category of design as well as second places in Best Industrial Innovation and Best Industrial Project.

To date, the MOTO-MAQLAB-UC3M team has successfully participated in three editions of one of the most prestigious motorcycle competitions at an academic level. We are constantly working and researching to improve the designs and implement new prototypes.

Our next goal: V edition MotoStudent, 2018.

See you there!
